USAID Owod project overview

As part of the implementation of its 2021-2026 Health Program, USAID has set up a new project called USAID/OWOD.

The aim of this project is to support the Senegalese government's efforts to implement integrated health plans in the 20 districts and 05 regional directorates. by addressing the key determinants of maternal, neonatal, infant and malaria morbidity and mortality to improve the health status of target populations.

Intervention regions

Diourbel

Kédougou

Kolda

Sedhiou

Tambacounda

Areas of intervention

The project's areas of intervention are the fight against malaria, SRMNIA, nutrition, FP, RSS, universal health coverage and WASH (water, hygiene and sanitation).

The project is being implemented by five strategic partners (RTI, ANCS, ACA, PAN Africare, PATH) with RTI as lead partner.

The key to the approach is demand-driven grants, awarded to districts to implement their ATPs with basic grants and grants for innovative projects.

Expected results

The expected results of the project are as follows:

  1. The health system strengthened at district and regional health directorate level;
  2. Better access to services
  3. Improved service quality
  4. Greater involvement of communities and other stakeholders

To achieve these results, the ANCS responsible for communication for social and behavioral change works in perfect synergy with other partners, notably ACA and PANAfricare, to develop high-impact activities on the CCSC.

Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) is a strategic approach to communication that aims to influence and modify individual behaviors, community practices and social norms to promote positive change in society. It is used primarily in the fields of public health, education, community development, and other areas where behavior change is needed to improve the well-being of individuals and communities.

SCCC is not limited to information or awareness-raising; it incorporates participation, dialogue and mobilization techniques to ensure that messages and interventions are culturally relevant and acceptable to target audiences.

Technical approach

To implement CCSC interventions, ANCS offers technical assistance to the 20 health districts and 05 regional health departments through :

  • A life-cycle approach to promoting health at individual, family and community levels. This approach will be articulated with a reinforcement of the integration and improvement of CCS coordination and the monitoring/evaluation of CCS interventions for their continuous improvement.
  • Capacity building for grassroots community organizations to ensure integration of the approaches into their routine interventions
